FAQs
what is hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is the therapeutic use of hypnosis, as opposed to stage hypnosis, which is used for entertainment purposes. It harnesses the power of the mind and imagination to help with a wide variety of problems or issues, such as learning how to manage anxiety or stress, sleep issues and confidence building.
what is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is basically a state of mind in which we become more responsive to positive suggestions that makes therapeutic change quicker and more powerful. Hypnosis gets the best results when the client wants it to work; they imagine it working and they temporarily ignore all distractions. Each idea creates a response in the body which the body remembers.
what is my role as a client in hypnotherapy?
Fortunately, your job’s quite straightforward. Firstly, insofar as possible, you should be completely honest with me about anything which relates to the therapy. That includes telling me anything you think I need to know and also asking questions if there’s anything you don’t understand. My role as a therapist is basically to provide you with support, advice, and techniques to help you achieve your goals. Therapy is a team effort and success depends upon how we both work together.
is hypnosis safe?
Hypnosis is completely safe when used appropriately. Please be assured that people in hypnosis cannot be made to do things against their will. You will know what is happening, and you only need to accept suggestions which you choose to accept. It’s important to realise that being in hypnosis is not necessarily like being asleep or unconscious. In fact, most people are aware of everything that is said or done. However, if you do feel sleepy or as if you are drifting off, that’s fine.
what happens in the therapy sessions?
We will agree a “treatment plan” together which includes specific goals for the therapy and also a self-help plan which covers techniques and exercises for you to do between sessions. It’s basically just an action plan for the therapy. People who do their homework and stick to the plan benefit much more quickly and powerfully from therapy. If at any time you encounter any serious problems between sessions, please get in touch by phone or email and I will do my best to help. It’s important that you feel able to do what we agree.
what qualifications do you have as a hypnotherapist?
I have a Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy, Mindfulness and Somatic (Body) Awareness which is accredited by eight professional organisations, and meets and exceeds all the professional requirements to be a registered hypnotherapist. The training programme, run by the UK College of Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy, is renowned within the profession and has a reputation for its no-nonsense scientific approach. I’m also fully insured and a member of the General Hypnotherapy Register.
